The primary function of a seminary is to prepare and equip individuals for spiritual service in the church or synagogue. A number of people who do not intend to become such leaders may also learn in seminaries. An individual may attend with the intent of achieving a qualification in chaplaincies, guidance, teaching and more learned subjects. One might learn in a seminary to enhance their spiritual life, to explore academic pastimes,online theology degree or to train for non-ordained ministries.

The average seminary will present a type of sacred and/or academic education, including the study of religious history and theology and may likewise grant several types of degrees. These types of establishments can be evangelical, fundamentalistic, Pentecostal, Reformed, Mormon, Roman Catholic, or even multi-denominational in orientation. There are four primary class areas that Christian seminaries offer: human, spiritual, intellectual and pastoral.
