Auto accidents claiming more and more teen lives

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), recent studies show 40 percent of the deaths among American teens are a result of an auto accident. The risk of a car crash is highest among the 16- to 19-year-old age group. Teen drivers 16- to 19-years-old are 400 percent more likely to be involved in an auto accident the any other age group. Teens are also more likely than any other age group to speed, drive after using alcohol or drugs and ride with an intoxicated driver.

In 2003, one out of four teen drivers who died in auto accidents had blood alcohol content (BAC) levels above the legal limit for adults. For the same year, 74 percent of teen drivers killed in auto accidents after drinking and driving were not wearing seat belts. This tragic Washington car accident is yet another reminder for parents and youngsters alike to be careful on the road and never get behind the wheel while under the influence.
